1:00 PM TOUR WILDERSTEIN,
a Queen Anne mansion, the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt's cousin and
confidante Margaret (Daisy) Suckley.
2:00 PM HIGH TEA in
Wilderstein's charming 1888 Gate Lodge (menu
featuring traditional delights such as delicate tea sandwiches, ham puff
petites, cream wafers, chocolate dipped strawberries, and Hudson Valley
seasonal favorites).
3:30 PM TOUR LOCUST GROVE,
an Italianate country house, designed for artist and inventor Samuel F. B.
Morse and home to noted collectors William & Martha Young.
The practice of enjoying high tea became popular during the mid-1800s.
Although it was generally thought of as a women's meal, men were often
present. An urn of boiling water was carried into the parlor or drawing
room along with teapots and a container of loose tea. The lady of the house
made the tea, poured it, and servants handed the cups to guests. Small
cakes and other dainty finger foods were served. More than just a meal,
high tea was an occasion for socializing with dear friends. Tea was
typically followed by the reading of poetry, listening to music, or a stroll
in the garden.
